Torn cabbage with red fermented beancurd 腐乳手撕包菜

I have no time to post any recipes lately, life was hectic I was working 6 - 7 days a week. This blog has been neglected hopefully you did not miss me much :).

Today's recipe is vegetarian, a cheap and cheerful stir fried cabbage with a rather unusual sauce. The secret ingredient is fermented red beancurd or hong fu ru 红腐乳. This recipe looks Sichuanese but I am quite sure it is from Beijing.

Stir fried pork and cucumber with yellow bean sauce 炒黃瓜醬

Imperial yogurt 宫廷奶酪

Yogurt was not common years ago in China. Yogurt has been and still eaten mainly by the upper northerners, Mongolia area or muslim population who raise sheep/goats and goat milk yogurt is quite common and traditional among them. Beijing style courgette pancake 老北京糊塌子

I didn't know they have courgette (zucchini) in China, all the time I thought courgette is a Western vegetable. Oriental courgette (zucchini) is similar to western type but the skin is usually much lighter in colour, like pastel green. Gao Lic Dou Sa 高力豆沙

Whenever we go to a Beijingnese restaurant, we always had Peking duck and Gao Lic Dou Sa 高力豆沙.These golden puff balls are rarely found in Cantonese restaurants. Chinese spätzle soup ‘gedatang’ 疙瘩湯

Gedatang 疙瘩湯 is a Northern Chinese (like Beijingnese) speciality. Many eaten this for breakfast or comfort noodle type soup.疙瘩 ‘ge da’ has various meanings in Chinese like a knot on a rope or some skin problems like warts, lumps or pimples. Chicken with sweet yellow bean paste

I love black bean sauce and chilli bean sauce. Not had a recipe for yellow bean sauce on the blog yet. Chinese: 炒土豆絲 (chow tu dou se)

Potato is such a versatile vegetable; boiled, fried, sauted, roasted, deep fried and mashed. But stir fried? This is what attracted me to try this recipe, popular in Northern China like Beijing and Shanghai. Northern Chinese has a lovely name for potato called 'tu dou' or translated as bean of the earth.

Stir fried potato is a very simple poor man's recipe.

Donkey Roly Poly

Chinese: 驢打滾 (Re da Kun) When you read the title you probably think what the hell am I talking about? Ever seen a donkey doing a roly poly on dusty yellow sand?
