Oriental inspired beef and vegetable stew

There are many ways to make a bowl of comfort beef stew. This non authentic recipe is one of my favourite and good way to clear up the vegetable drawer in the fridge. The stew looks ordinary like any tomatoey beef stew but with few oriental ingredients this will taste quite different. Gochujang gives a lovely chilli flavour without being too spicy hot. Star anise is great added to any beef stew

Honey lemon and ginger fish

I love honey, lemon and ginger hot drink. I have it quite often with or without a cold. This combination also works for a Chinese style sweet and sour.

Here is the recipe for this simple fried fish with honey lemon and ginger sauce.

Ingredients:

about 500g fish fillet
1 tbsp soy sauce
pinch of ground pepper
2 tbsp plain flour
2 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch)
1 egg beaten

Spicy aubergine with basil

For all the aubergine (eggplant) fans out there, if you like my aubergine recipes here is another one for you. The recipe is something I put together what I can find in my fridge and overload of basil in the garden. It's Thai flavour combining some of my favourite ingredients together. It's not pretty but very yummy. If you do try hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Ingredients:2 medium

Konjac or konnyaku

Have you ever eaten S E Asian style Konjac candy, rubbery jelly/jello cups that look like these? I like them but in recent years this candy had very bad press and banned in some countries due to some children choked to death eating them. I reckon children could eat these jelly cups without chewing and also sucking the jelly out of the plastic cup can be dangerous because the lump of jelly can

Caramelised wings

This recipe is based on Vietnamese caramel pork belly. I have been cooking this repeatedly for many years and still not tired of it. It's a rewarding recipe with only few ingredients and simple method. The wings are succulent and full of flavour, sweet and salty. Finger licking good. Whenever I cook this, all I need is just plain white rice, nothing else.If you like cola wings you will love this

Spice infused pineapple

I love fresh pineapple just can't get enough of it. The only thing I have to be careful is fresh pineapple sometime gives me mouth ulcers. I love stewing pineapple for a short while with a little sugar and a few strips of lime zest, that's nice and helps to avoid ulcers. Lately I found stewing pineapple with spices is very tasty and I can have it with a meal. This recipe is my current favourite

Corned beef stir fry

I am not ashamed to say I love tinned corned beef as much as I love Spam or Chinese luncheon meat. I don't like plain corned beef straight from the tin for sandwiches. We always had it stir fried with onion. Every time I make this I can always eat a big bowlful of hot steamy rice. It's trashy but tasty comfort food, sometime it's what I need. Any leftover I normally make sandwiches. This recipe

Coca-cola wings 可樂雞翼

Coke is not only a refreshing fizzy drink, it's quite a nice marinade for meat. Many people are familiar with ham cooked in Coke, famously introduced by Nigella few years back. There are also Chinese recipes related to Coca-cola. When getting a cold, many like a hot flat ginger-lemon-Coke 薑檸樂, a lovely drink and quite an effective cure. Coke is really nice to go with ribs, pork chops and chicken

Cocktail buns 雞尾包

Cocktail buns (雞尾包 gai mei bao) were originated from Hong Kong, now available in nearly all oriental bakeries in the world. These are soft buns filled with a buttery coconut filling. I love them since I was a kid. Not very slimming but utterly delicious especially when they are still warm.

Most bakeries use dough improver to make the buns very soft. I love the softness of the bun texture but
